Norwich University Shaw Outdoor Center
Trail Marathon, Heavy Half Marathon, 10k,
& Kids Mile Trail Races
Directly east of Northfield Vermont, lies a hidden gem of rolling single track, winding forest roads, and abandoned ski slopes on the flanks of Paine Mountain. With steep climbs and descents and incredible views, this series of forested trails make for some of the best trail running in Central VT!
All races start and finish at Norwich University’s Shaw Outdoor Center, and the courses take advantage of both the Shaw Center’s extensive mountain bike network and the Northfield Town Forest.
Experience another side of Paine!
Challenge yourself to a marathon course spanning the ridge between Northfield and Berlin. You'll experience many different types of trails from old logging roads to smooth singletrack. The course is 90% trails with one small dirt road section. Expect a very runnable but tough race!
The new marathon course follows the half marathon route until the summit of Paine Mountain. From there, the marathon drops steeply down the north side of Paine Mountain into old farm fields with sweeping views to the northeast. At the bottom of the fields runners will turn north onto Onion River Road, a class 4 town road, and travel on it to the edge of Berlin Pond. After a brief dirt road section along the pond, runners will venture back into the woods on some twisty, rolling mountain bike trails managed by Montpelier Area Mountain Bike Association. After this loop, it's time to make the trek back up Paine Mountain via the Berlin Irish Hill trails. Once you visit the summit of Paine for the second time, it's all downhill to the finish!
Heavy Half Marathon Course
Half Marathon Profile
Our Full Marathon, Heavy Half Marathon and the 10k traverse the slopes of Paine Mountain on single track, old roads, and ski slopes that have been developed into multi use trails. All races will be run partially on trails managed and meticulously maintained by the Norwich University Shaw Outdoor Center, and partially on single track trails in the Town of Northfield Municipal Forest.

Full Marathon runners will have access to aid stations on course 5 times. Half Marathon racers will have access to at least two aid stations while on course. 10k racers will only have access to one. Racers are encouraged to use their own judgement about fueling, but carrying hydration, gels, etc. is highly encouraged. Each aid station will be well stocked with standard ultra event fuel and hydration. Paine Mountain Race is a cup-free race! In an attempt to reduce race waste, we are eliminating all disposable single use cups. Please bring a bottle or reusable cup for aid station refueling. If you have additional food specific needs, please make sure you come prepared! There will also be a supply of Band Aids, Vaseline, and duct tape, plus a few other basic first aid supplies but there will not necessarily be first aid care givers at all aid stations. We will have volunteer first aid caregivers at the start/finish.
Racer crews and spectators are welcome anywhere on the course, but driving access is only available at the start/finish area at the Shaw Outdoor Center. We certainly would encourage spectators to hike out into the beautiful forest to cheer on our competitors but please make sure your friends/family take a map and appropriate supplies, there's a lot of forest out there! Runner aid is not permitted by crews except at aid stations.
If you must drop, you must notify a race official at the start/finish area ASAP so we don't go looking for you!
This race is subject to the Ironwood Adventure Works terms and conditions, and rules for competition.
